Module 7 - Hand Injuries
Soft Tissue Coverage
There are many options for coverage of soft tissue defects following hand injuries. The simplest method which will yield predictable stable soft tissue coverage is the most appropriate. The simplest method is primary repair of the laceration. Often the lacerations and injuries appear more dramatic at the outset; however, after careful débribement and exploration, then primary repair is usually possible. Wounds such as animal bites may be allowed to heal in. The next simplest technique for reconstruction is a partial or full-thickness skin graft. Following that, other options include local skin flaps, regional skin flaps, and free-tissue transfer. The choice of the ideal soft tissue coverage requires consideration of the extent of the deformity, the uninjured tissues available, and patient factors.
