Module 7 - Hand Injuries
Injection Injuries
Machines that spray liquid at high pressure are used for painting, cleaning, and greasing. Often the young male worker is injured when the gun accidentally sprays the non-dominant index finger. This causes the paint or grease or other material to spread in the soft tissues of the digit creating a widespread chemical injury. If untreated, the finger will go on to become very stiff and painful and usually dysfunctional. This type of injury requires emergency débribement by a hand surgeon with irrigation and antibiotic treatment. Postoperative physiotherapy is essential to achieve optimal range of motion.
