Module 7 - Hand Injuries
Burn Injuries
Burn injuries of the hand are classified according to depth. First degree burns are marked by erythema much like a sunburn. Second degree burns or partial-thickness burns have blisters but still retain sensation. Third degree or full-thickness burns have loss of sensation and are leather-like in appearence. Fourth degree burns involve underlying structures such as bones or tendons.
Burn injuries of the hand occur in association with other hand injuries such as printing press, crush wounds, and electrical burns due to flash burn injuries.
The treatment of hand burns is usually expectant. Generally, Jelonet and gauze dressing is used daily and the burn wound is allowed to heal spontaneously. If thick, non-viable third degree burns are noted, then early débribement and grafting produces the best range of motion and outcome.
